The Pelham-Clinton Twins

William Collins R.A. (1788-1847)

Signed and dated, Exhibited R.A. 1819, No. 23. One of the family portraits painted for the 4th Duke of Newcastle at Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire in the summer of 1818, this shows the Duke and Duchess's fifth and sixth children, the twins Lord Charles Pelham-Clinton and Lord Thomas Pelham-Clinton. Characteristically for Collins, the subjects aren't formally posed but engaged in an activity. He shows the boys leafing through - and tossing aside - volumes from the ducal library.
